Each year, we ask educators to nominate their students and colleagues to recognize their dedication and achievements inside and outside the classroom. In previous years, more than $35,000 dollars has been awarded to outstanding READ 180, MATH 180, and System 44 students and their teachers.

T&D: H-K-T fifth grader wins national award for overcoming learning obstacles

Joshua Doles, a fifth grader at Hunter-Kinard-Tyler Elementary School, was one of 16 students recognized nationally for overcoming obstacles and becoming a thriving, successful learner. Joshua improved in math by 129 percentage points last year and won $500 in the 2019 National 180 Student Awards sponsored by educational publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Hugo Hernandez's class surprised him with a special breakfast after winning the 2019 National 180 Student Award. Doctors said Hugo would never be able to read because of a medical condition, but Hugo showed personal growth.

A local middle school student is being recognized with a national award for outstanding achievement in math. Mabelvale Middle School student Znya Wright received the National 180 Award, a prestigious honor only 16 students in the country achieve.  Her story is inspiring because she made huge progress overcoming obstacles inside and outside of the classroom to significantly increase her math scores.

A student at L.R. Tippens Education Center was surprised Wednesday by teachers, family members and classmates to celebrate him for a special reason: he is one of three winners in his age group in the U.S. to receive a grand prize of the national 180 Student Awards. Connor Oakes, 13, was the only student from Georgia to receive an award that recognizes those who, with the help of their teachers, have made notable progress in literacy and math achievement as well as personal growth outside the classroom.

A Joplin student gets a big surprise tonight as he finds out he is a winner of a national award. Two years ago, Zander Boyes wasn't even reading at a kindergarten level, but with the help of his teachers and family, he's now ahead of his class and excelling in more than just school.
